As the school year approaches, the rhythm of our homes shifts. Even though my children are now grown, I vividly remember the seasons of balancing military life, school schedules, and nurturing faith. Now, as a mother of three adults, a military wife, and the CEO of a Virtual Assistant Agency in Healthcare Administration, I can reflect on the importance of building strong family traditions rooted in faith. These traditions shaped not only my children’s walk with Christ but also the way we connected as a family amidst the busyness of life.

The school year can feel like a whirlwind—homework, extracurriculars, work demands, and in our case, navigating deployments and relocations. In the midst of this, grounding our family in faith-centered traditions created a sense of consistency and purpose. These traditions didn't have to be grand, but they were meaningful, and they helped our family stay connected to God and to each other.
Weekly Family Devotions
One of our key traditions was setting aside time for weekly family devotions. Even when life felt chaotic, we committed to this. Sometimes it was a full hour on a Sunday afternoon; other times it was just 15 minutes squeezed in between activities. But that time, however short, was sacred. We’d read scripture, pray, and talk about what God was doing in our lives. This became a place where our kids learned to express their faith and ask questions, fostering a deeper connection with God and with us as parents.
As a military family, we faced frequent transitions, and those devotions became an anchor. Whether we were living in base housing or far from family, the constant of gathering around the Word reminded us of our eternal home in Christ. It didn’t matter where we were stationed; God was always with us, and our time together as a family helped us hold onto that truth.
Prayer Traditions for the School Year
Each year, we developed a simple yet profound tradition at the start of the school year: praying over each child, their teachers, and the school environment. Before the first day of school, we’d gather as a family and pray. We’d ask God for protection, wisdom, and guidance—not just for our children but for their friends, classmates, and educators. This helped our kids start the year with a sense of purpose and a reminder that they carried the light of Christ into their schools.
This prayer tradition also continued into the year. Sometimes, I'd slip little notes of scripture into their lunches or text a prayer if they were older. It was a way of reminding them that no matter where they were or what challenges they faced, they weren’t alone—God and their family were always with them.
Celebrating Milestones with Faith
Finally, we celebrated milestones in light of our faith. First days of school, good report cards, even small victories like making it through a tough week—each was an opportunity to point back to God’s faithfulness. We’d celebrate with a special family meal or a small outing, thanking God for the blessings He provided.
These celebrations weren’t just about the accomplishments themselves but about teaching our kids to recognize God’s hand in their lives. They learned that their success was a partnership with God and that His plans for them were good.
Building strong family traditions rooted in faith for the new school year doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s about intentionality—making space for God in the everyday hustle and passing down the values that are eternal. Now that my children are grown, I can see the fruit of those simple traditions. They have grown into strong, faith-filled adults, and I am forever grateful that, with God’s help, we built a foundation that will carry them through every season of life.
